Here's what Camp 8 looked like in 1926
Here's what it looks like in 2011. Not much left....
Just a few artifacts. Left: the remains of a foundation to some structure.
right: A welder's gas bottle
More structure foundations.
The one on the right was a very long but not very wide building
This bridge may well lead to a trail that goes into Vernonia at or at least close
to the Banks-Vernonia Linear Park Trail. I was not able to fully explore this road
and all it's forks but according to my GPS it looks promising. The guy who "wrote the
book" on these trails has been less than forthcoming with details on how to actually
do most of these hikes.... even if you did buy his book. So... save your money and
I'll provide correct, detailed, fail safe details on how to get from here to there.
Heading from Scappoose to Vernonia, turn left and go across the bridge pictured
on the lower left. After a few hundred feet you'll come out on Highway 47 pictured
on the lower right.
Walk across the highway and continue along the road that's currently marked
closed to bridge construction. This is apparently part of the Scappoose Vernonia
Highway Salmon Passage Improvement Project which will probably be quite impressive
when it's completed.
There's a marker here for Brooks Anderson who died at age 33 when the stolen
car he was trying to elude Police in crashed into a tree at this location and burst into flames when
he tried to avoid Police spike strips. His passenger, Robert Regan, 37, died at the
hospital from crash related injuries. While any loss of life is tragic, Anderson
apparently had a long criminal history. At the time of his death, Anderson was
wanted on seven outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants, including unlawful
possession of methamphetamine, felony attempt to elude, second-degree attempted
assault and reckless driving. This all sounds very Darwinian to me...
This location is about 6 miles from Vernonia. You'll be gaining a lot of altitude
for the next couple of miles. Nice views and you are definitely off the beaten path
out here. Stay on the main road until you get to the top. There are several logging
and gas line serice roads off of this main road but none of them seem to go to Vernonia.
When you get to almost the top of the hill, you come to this fork in the road.
I "think" the road to the right, marked "M 212" goes into Vernonia. I'll have to
come back another time to verify this. But this looks like the end of Pebble Creek
MNLN that goes directly to Vernonia Lake.
I followed the main road for several more miles thinking this would be the more
likely route to Vernonia. But according to my GPS, this road actually starts turning
back the way you came. If you come up on this large yellow gate, you are going the
wrong way.
Nice views up here but also going the wrong way....
