This is yet another Table Mountain area hike.
We did this hike (approached from the North) for
Julie's birthday in 2012.

It was a hot (high 80's), muggy, partly sunny day.. but it was supposed
to turn cold and wet starting tomorrow so...... it was very hazy but there were
some nice views including this one of Mount Hood as seen from the Table Mountain
summit.
We started out at the Aldridge Butte trailhead and went over Cedar Mountain.
This trail has improved a lot since the first time we went this way, several years
ago. This is the first time we've done this segment and didn't lose the trail even
once. Navigation is still problematic in deep snow though. Mostly, you want to
travel North and stay on the top portion of the ridge.
It's 3.8 miles from the aldridge Butte trailhead to the PCT. Takes about 3 hours
to hike.
There are a lot of colorful weeds up here. This picture was taken just before
reaching the false summit of Cedar Mountain.
Here's a view of Hamilton Mountain from the Cedar Mountain false summit. There
really isn't much of a view at the true summit which looks like a shark fin from a
distance.
The Cedar Mountain trail comes out at the PCT right at the Table Mountain West
portal. We went North on the PCT and took the North Face approach to Table Mountain.
Go about 2.5 miles and just past the power lines, go right (East) and up a wide
logging road. At the very top of the hill, there are two trails to the right.
One (the first) obviously goes nowhere. Take the second trail which heads Southerly.
The trail is easy enough to follow but there is a LOT of blow down out here. There's
been some trail maintenance (but not much). I don't think many people besides the odd
Mazama hike go this way.
There's some exposure as you near Table Mountain so this route might not be suitable
for children or dogs.
There are some good views at the West end of Table Mountain. Today we had good
(but hazy) views of Mount Saint Helens, Mount Rainier and Mount Adams as well as
the Columbia River Gorge.
And a nice view of Mount Hood from the "official" Table Mountain Summit. The
top of Table Mountain is actually quite flat, hence it's name.
Taking the North approach allowed us to skip Heartbreak Ridge and the boulder field.
Came down the West Portal which is steep with slippery rocks and scree. Not Julie's
favorite segment. Here's a view of The Two Chiefs on the way down from a nice view
point.
There was very little breeze today which is unusual for the Gorge. This made the
hike a LOT hotter than it would have been otherwise.
