Part five -
Camp 8 to Vernonia, linking up with the
Banks-Vernonia Linear Park Trail
GETTING THERE AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
So I'm back in 2014 to see how much this trail and hike has improved over the
past four years.
Segment one:
Chapman Landing to the "official" CZ trailhead
Segment two:
The "official" CZ trailhead to the Nahalem Divide Summit
Segment three:
The Nahalem Divide Summit to Camp 8
Segment four:
Camp 8 to the Vernonia trailhead
Segment five:
Camp 8 to the Pittsburg trailhead
Segment six: The Nahalem Divide trail tunnel
East Portal
West Portal
Segment seven:
Connecting the Banks-Vernonia and Crown-Zellerbach Trails
Segment eight:
Scaponia County Park
The Elk Creek trailhead is on the S-V highway and is easily found.
This is not an "official" trailhead but there is plenty of space for parking so
long as you are careful not to block truck and service vehicle access.
If you just want to visit Camp 8, this would be a good place to park. It is
also my recommened trailhead for those wanting to do the next segments of this
hike (Camp 8 to Pittsburg or Camp 8 to Vernonia).
There's a marker here for Brooks Anderson and his nit-wit friend.
Brooks Anderson died at age 33 when the stolen car he was trying to elude Police in
crashed into a tree at this location and burst into flames when he tried to avoid
Police spike strips. His passenger, Robert Regan, 37, died at the
hospital from crash related injuries. While any loss of life is tragic, Anderson
apparently had a long criminal history. At the time of his death, Anderson was
wanted on seven outstanding felony and misdemeanor warrants, including unlawful
possession of methamphetamine, felony attempt to elude, second-degree attempted
assault and reckless driving. This all sounds very Darwinian to me...
To head to Camp 8 and Pittsburg (or the Nahalem Divide Summit) Cross the
S-V Highway and head toward the trailhead just across the street.
You'll cross this bridge and Camp 8 will come into view.
This natural gas relay station will be on your right.
Camp 8 is straight ahead. You'll turn left for Pittsburg and right for the
Nahalem Divide Summit.
If you continue straight, towards Pittsburg, the next (and last) trailhead is
1.76 miles from Camp 8.
This trailhead is not marked but I'll call it the Dog Creek Trailhead that's
near Baker Point.
This trailhead is about 2 miles west of the Elk Creek trailhead and several miles
from the Scappoose fork on the S-V highway, near Pittsburg. Easy enough to see
and is the first major turn out (there is a small one before this) on the right
side of the S-V Highway, heading towards Scappoose.
It's 1.76 miles from this trailhead to Camp 8 and 8.28 miles to the Nahalem Divide
Summit.
Continue your travel past the white gate and on to Pittsburg which is about 2 miles
further.
